ADDRESS UNKNOWN

Based on the short novel by Kathrine Kressmann Taylor
Directed by: Marianna Arzumanova
Starring: Evgeny Kissin, Thomas Hampson, Karina Arzumanova
Based on the bestselling novel, which was written as an anti-fascist warning and banned in 1930s Germany for dramatically exposing the threat of Nazism, Address Unknown tells the story of one friendship, one love, and one betrayal.
Two childhood friends, one German and one Jewish, bound by a student fraternity in Germany and then a gallery business in America, are now separated by the Atlantic. Max continues the Schulse-Eisenstein Galleries in San Francisco, while Martin and his wife and young children move back to native Germany.
In an era of austerity, recession, and rising nationalism, two friends are torn apart when the Nazi regime infiltrates their friendship and families to devastating effect.
The performance is especially notable for the psychological interpretation of the text. How, under the pressures of propaganda and conformism, does a charming and talented artist and specialist in history of art become a rabid defender of the new Nazi regime? How exactly does he explain his newfound beliefs? ADDRESS UNKNOWN is a timely warning of how humanity can fail in the face of extreme ideology.

The performance will be followed by a Q & A with the cast.
Part of the ticket sales proceeds will be donated to UJA of New York’s Israel Emergency Fund.
